I designed and implemented a project in environmental and basic health
education, for the Pontal da Barra Women's Association. Pontal da Barra is an
economically disadvantaged fishing community on Lake Mundau,
within the urban region of Maceió,
a city in the state of Alagoas in Northeastern Brazil.
This project was conducted in coordination and with support from Braskem, a
regional mining company, Petrobras, Brazil's national petroleum company, and
the Maceió city government.
In this program, I and community leaders taught
- Water hygiene: separation of drinking water from contaminated water, and
how to purify available water resources
- How to appropriately use purified water for cleaning foodstufs and cooking
- How to create organic vegetable gardens and to identify recyclable materials
- Development of handicrafts using recycled materials
Before this project, the community had considerable problems with intestinal
and skin parasites and disease stemming from poor access to pure water. After
the project, the community had considerably improved public health and also
had improved its economy, from the development of new handicrafts for sale to
tourists.
